Why Use DISC and Motivators?

About the Tools:

The Talent Insights Series is made up of two separate assessments, well-known for and validated in measuring human performance: the DISC behavioural model and the Workplace Motivators. These models are described in more detail on their own individual pages; however, a few highlights of each model are below.

DISC profile and motivators profile

DISC Profile The DISC profile (Dominance, Influence, Steadiness, Compliance) measures your behaviour and communication style. DISC is one of the most popular assessments across Fortune 500 organisations for personal and professional development. The reason the DISC profile is so invaluable is because it offers a language (or set of terms) to describe observable human behaviour. As behaviours are at the surface of who we are, it is critical that we understand the actions we take and how we are perceived.

Workplace Motivators The Workplace Motivators explains why we move into action as well as what motivates us to achieve, sell, manage, connect with customers and more. The assessment measures six values. Because our values shape the way we see the world, our values motivate us to take action. Therefore by measuring values, the Workplace Motivators is able to produce a report that identifies why we do what we do.

With a combined understanding of your behavioural style and intrinsic motivators, you are able to understand the two outer layers of human performance. This gives you in-depth knowledge about who you are and enables you to develop personally and professionally faster. Common Uses for Talent Insights:

Management / Leadership Development Leadership relies on the ability of the leader to understand their situation and the people around them. Effective leaders know their team: what makes them tick, what strengths they possess, how they prefer to go about their work, and what activities will excite or deflate them.

DISC helps reveal a person’s communication style, while motivators reveal a person’s drivers. Both are fundamental to leadership because they give the leader the power to speak the same language as another person — to see things through their eyes. Talent Insights gives a leader the power to understand how others prefer to work, communicate and interact, as well as why they will move into action. By understanding the behaviour and motivators of the people they manage, leaders can tailor their management strategies to suit individual needs. The Talent Insights profile is used across the globe to help leaders of all shapes and sizes to become more self-aware and socially skilled.

Communication Training Communication is the key to success in almost every aspect of our lives. DISC is the first step towards becoming a more effective communicator because it explains the basic communication tendencies that are present in each person throughout the world. The Motivators model takes communication a step further by understanding the lens through which people filter messages. Even if we are good at communicating with someone in a way that fits with their DISC style, if we are communicating the wrong message — one that conflicts with their values — the message will fall flat. To communicate more effectively, we need to be aware of our values, and then learn to recognise the values of others so that we can send the right messages.

Team Building / Team Effectiveness Organisations that rely on teams to accomplish business goals need to ensure that team members are functioning in high-trust, low-friction environments. The most productive teams understand how each of its members likes to operate; how they prefer to be communicated to, and what pushes their buttons. Having a set of terms to discuss behavioural and motivational differences can help a team understand their inherent strengths and potential areas for conflict that commonly arise in group situations.

Sales Training Sales are the lifeblood of every organisation. Salespeople are only as effective as their ability to build relationships and connect their services to meet to needs and desires of their customers. Underlying every sale is a motivating reason to buy. WPMOT helps a sales force by helping them understand what goals are important to different types of customers and help the sales people understand how to “speak their language.” This, combined with DISC, helps a sales force understand their natural approach to the sales process, and how to adapt their approach to different prospects.

Customer Service Training Have you ever met a customer service representative who was difficult to deal with? Great customer service can make or break an organisation. You can have a great office, fantastic product and excellent sales force, but without a great customer service team, customers will not come back. Understanding the different ways that customers behave and communicate, along with the added insight of their motivators will help any customer service team to assist customers more efficiently and avoid bad customer experiences.

Employee Engagement DISC is a tool commonly used in employee engagement in order to help managers understand how people prefer to approach their work, and how they (as managers) should adapt their communication to suit the styles of others. The WPMOT tool helps a manager understand why a person will move into action, so they are able to develop recognition and reward plans tailored to that person’s values. Training in the DISC and WPMOT language gives managers a model to help understand their team members and the how to manage them in a way that will lead to higher levels of engagement and performance.

Career Coaching / Mentoring The Talent Insights profile saves the coach time and guesswork. Without one, it is extremely difficult to understand how a person views the world. The Talent Insights profile provides the coach with detailed information on the individual’s strengths, talents, limitations and challenges. This information is the first step towards self-awareness, helping the coachee develop an accurate perception of themselves. The profile is used in career coaching to help the coachee develop more self awareness, provide a model for interacting with others, and understand the type of work the will find most intrinsically rewarding.

Conflict Resolution Once a person is familiar with DISC, they will be able to minimise ‘surface conflict’ or ‘surface tension’ by being aware of the communication preferences of those around them. Motivators go beyond these surface issues to uncover the true source of dissatisfaction: when a person’s core values are violated or ignored. Almost all conflict in any situation stems from a motivators disconnect between the parties — be it between two people, a person and their job, or a person and their environment.

Induction It is of the utmost importance that new recruits feel as though they are ‘one of the team’ when beginning their employment. As part of welcoming new employees, companies will typically include safety training, company information, marketplace information, and practical skills training, however, they can often overlook a very crucial element: relationships.

The Talent Insights profile can be used to support new hires transition into their team quickly by helping them understand their manager as well as their team members: their communication style, and work preferences, as well as their unique personal values, motivations and attitudes.

Recruitment / Selection The Talent Insights profile gives the hiring manager additional information about a candidate’s basic behavioural tendencies and core values. The manager therefore has a clearer picture about what they can expect from the candidate; and how that might contrast with their own management style, the company culture, the other team members, and the nature of the work itself.

Talent Insights can also help highlight potential challenges with the candidate, which can then be addressed and targeted with questions in the interview stage. The profile can validate or challenge your impression of the candidate, and be used to determine if there is an apparent mis-match between the role and the candidate's natural behaviour or values. Helping to select a candidate with the right fit will ensure that the person is naturally suited to the type of work and the organisational culture.

Job Benchmarking Job Benchmarking is the name of a patented process used to identify the traits and qualities that an ideal candidate needs in order to be successful in a particular position & organisation. The Talent Insights profile is uniquely able to assess 8 behaviours and 6 motivators in order of importance to a given role.
